Completed By: DKI's Providers
On 27 July 2023, DKI received an emergency call from one of DKI’s clients in Washington State: an explosion at a lithium-ion battery storage area had resulted in a large fire, which resulted in smoke and fire damage to multiple levels of one of their facilities, including research and development areas as well as high-security component development areas.
DKI immediately dispatched CRC, one of its local DKI PROs™ based in Redmond, to begin the job (DKI job # 23-4705-GS). The CRC team mobilized and were on site within 4 hours to evaluate the situation and develop a plan in consultation with the client. The client approved all projected costs, and CRC began work right away. DKI implemented a double-shift process to expedite completion of critical areas first. A segmented and sequenced payment allocation process was developed to address the client’s needs.
The project required high-security clearance for both CRC and its abatement subcontractors. A particular challenge was safely remediating the effects of the off-gassed compounds and residual smoke from the materials burned in the fire; the CRC team developed each stage of the plan in strict accordance with hazmat and industrial hygiene protocols. Areas were segregated: cleanup, abatement, and selected demolition were performed one at a time in each. Negative air conditions were established in each area, along with air scrubbers and heavy containment, while work was conducted.
As each area was remediated and restored, DKI’s industrial hygiene team methodically performed air and surface sampling and post-abatement testing. DKI’s team performed segregation cleanup and abatement until each area had been completed and cleared, and clearance reports had been received. Only after each area was fully cleared was it turned over to the client team.
The overall project was eventually extended to 9 months upon discovery of additional affected components, including the facility’s entire HVAC system and areas such as its elevator shafts and pits. DKI brought in an additional DKI Provider, PAS, to perform the final segments of remediation, demolition, and abatement of hazardous materials in accordance with specified environmental protocols. The project was ultimately completed to the full satisfaction of the client, with final invoicing totaling $778,000.
